How is the AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® Trifocal IOL different than other trifocal lenses?

The PanOptix® lens uses ENLIGHTEN® Optical Technology, a proprietary design that optimizes intermediate vision without compromising near and distance vision. It does so in two ways:

• By maximizing the amount of light that reaches the retina, giving you crisp vision at every distance under various lighting conditions and
• By setting the intermediate vision focal point to a distance that is well suited for today’s lifestyles.

So properly selected PanOptix® patients can, for instance, read menus (near vision), work at their computer (intermediate vision), or play golf (far vision) with relative ease.

What are surgeons saying about this step forward?

This lens has enjoyed popularity since its introduction. Indeed, over 99 percent of patients participating in the PanOptix® clinical trials in the U.S. said that they would choose the lens again if given a choice.

What’s more, like all of the Premium intraocular lenses offered at our center, PanOptix® lenses filter UV light to protect your eyes from sunlight and from overly luminous computer screens.

Are there any negative side effects associated with the PanOptix® lens?

At AGEI, we feel it’s important to make patients aware of the pros and cons of every product and surgery so that they can make an informed decision about their treatment options. In the case of the PanOptix® lens, side effects reported during clinical trials included visual disturbances such as glare, rings around lights, starbursts (rays around light sources), and reduced contrast sensitivity (decrease in the ability to distinguish objects from their background, particularly in dim lighting).

These side effects may make it more difficult for patients to see while driving at night or completing tasks in low lighting conditions such as at night or in fog, or in a dimly lit room as compared to before surgery.

It is important to note, however, that many physicians conducting the clinical trials found that the vast majority of participants reported that within the first few months following surgery they were no longer aware of glare, halos, starbursts, or reduced contrast sensitivity.

How do I know I am a good candidate for the PanOptix® lens?

The best premium lens match relies upon a person’s eye shape, health, and lifestyle needs. At Assil Gaur Eye Institute, we recommend the PanOptix® lens for the subset of patients who will benefit the most. We start by using highly sophisticated tools to measure your eye’s shape, assess its health status, and understand its focusing characteristics before surgery.

During surgery, we’ll perform more measurements after removing the cataract. We perform these tests with laser technology known as the ORA Aberrometer (AGEI was the world’s first center to utilize ORA).

We measure eye power after your cataract has been removed to eliminate the effect that the cloudy cataract lens has on your prescription. By getting the most accurate measurement of your true eye power without the haze, we can further determine the very best lens design and power, to suit your particular vision needs. We can thus determine the ideal Premium Lens choice that is best suited for your eye – all of which we keep available at our center.

While the PanOptix® IOL is designed to provide good vision in most day-to-day situations without the need for glasses, you may find that your vision for a few detailed tasks (e.g., reading small print or threading a needle) can be further optimized by wearing glasses.

This is often the case with all intraocular lenses, so it’s important that you understand that there is no guarantee that you will not need still benefit from reading glasses for certain tasks if you receive a PanOptix® lens implant.
