Imagine tooling along on your motorcycle off-road, bumps coming out of nowhere, steep curves flying at you like a video game, steep gullies to the right and left, and tree branches anxious to tomahawk you. For the confessed adrenaline junkie, Scott King’s rapidly failing distance vision had to be fixed!
This steadfast position is especially true for Scott, who owns Del Amo Sports, a chain of five motorcycle and off-road vehicle stores throughout Southern California.
As a glasses-wearing myopic (one who is nearsighted) since the age of 10, his condition had gotten progressively worse over the years. At 57, he wore +250 glasses and often missed his exit on the freeway.
A referral to Dr. Kerry Assil changed his life almost immediately.
In the past decades, myopia has become the most frequent developmental disorder in the eyes of people worldwide, now affecting more than two billion individuals. According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), almost 30% of Americans are nearsighted.
Nearsightedness is a vision condition where close objects are seen clearly, but distant objects appear blurry. This occurs because the light entering the eye is not focused correctly. After all, the shape of the eye is slightly abnormal. If you have myopia, your eyeball is likely too long, or your cornea is too rounded. These structural changes can cause your eye to focus incorrectly.
Put simply, wearing glasses is inconvenient for sports or other high-impact activities because of the potential for breaking or loss. But the newest premium intraocular lenses offer a seamless continuum of vision from distance to intermediate vision to near vision, without even the need for reading glasses. Multifocal IOLs (also known as accommodating IOLs) also provide a wider field of vision than spectacles and are perfect for active lifestyles.
After preoperative measurements, Scott and Dr. Assil agreed upon the FDA-approved Tecnis Odyssey premium IOL. “The decision for iol exchange was based upon a multifocal lens implantation optimizing both spherical and chromatic aberration enhancements,” says Dr. Assil, referring to Scott’s ocular inability to identify all colors of the spectrum with contrast sensitivity. “Now Scott has multiple focal points in both eyes simultaneously, just like the natural lenses in our eyes do.”
Following a brief laser corneal surgery in Dr. Assil’s operating suite, Scott picked up his life from where he left off. Except now he had great visual acuity and a renewed zest for life.
“One day after the surgical procedure, I was driving pretty damn good,” he says, adding that he has not had any side effects, such as halos. “I wish I had done it a lot sooner.”
Funny story: Scott recommended a good friend of his to Dr. Assil. While at Assil Gaur Eye Institute’s office, Scott heard a familiar voice. It was his good friend, who had already seen Dr. Assil and was a good candidate for the same Odyssey premium lens surgery that Scott had. According to Scott, his friend had a “great visual outcome, too.”
With complete patient satisfaction, Scott is dedicated to referring his friends and customers to Dr. Assil. “A referral is the highest form of flattery,” Scott said, adding that a sterling reputation is priceless. “I always do an excellent job for my Delamo Sports customers, and Dr. Assil always does a great job for his patients.
And so, what of the sack loads of cheap glasses Scott’s wife formerly bought at Costco? “We’re getting ready to have a glasses-burning party,” says Scott of his spectacle independence.
We wish him happy trails!
In addition to intraocular lens implantation, Dr. Assil is one of the most experienced eye surgeons in the United States. With over 70,000 eye surgeries, he has improved the quality of vision for a wide range of vision problems.
Assil Gaur Eye Institute has assembled a team of top ophthalmologists from around the country who offer their patients the highest quality of specialist eye care in the United States.
In keeping with AGEI's founding principles, eye surgeons keep their clinics comfortable and familiar, much like family-run medical practices used to be.
In addition to refractive lens exchange and cataract surgery, the ophthalmology experts at AGEI are nationally recognized for their eye care and treatment options for a full range of eye conditions such as hyperopia glaucoma, macular edema, retinal detachment (and other vision loss retinal procedures), keratoconus, cornea conditions, floaters and flashes, dry eye, presbyopia, corneal astigmatism, farsightedness, macular degeneration, myopia, contact lenses, nearsightedness, retinal dystrophy. And, of course, refractive surgeries such as LASIK surgery, PRK, and many more laser procedures.
AGEI also offers cataract patients many IOL options, as there is no “one size fits all” solution for vision correction. For example, there are monofocal IOLs (monovision) lenses, toric lenses, light adjustable lenses, toric IOLs, presbyopia-correcting IOLs, bifocal IOLs, trifocal and extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses.
Today, AGEI is nationally recognized for its compassionate, patient-centric care, commitment to pioneering advances in ophthalmology, and dedication to supporting its patients' and the community's health and well-being. Please call (866) 945-2745 or make an appointment online.
